What you need to know about CPE:
This is an examination at an advanced level, which is recognised as fulfilling English language
requirements by British universities and for business and academic purposes around the world.
CPE has five components: Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening, Speaking.
Candidates are assessed as to their ability to read and understand texts taken from fiction and non-fiction books, journals,
newspapers and magazines. They are tested on their ability to understand the meaning of written English at word, phrase, sentence,
paragraph and whole text level.
The paper contains four parts and 40 questions, which take the form of three multiple-choice tasks and a gapped text task.
Part 1 is made up of three short texts, Part 2 four short texts and Parts 3 and 4 each have one longer text.
Candidates are assessed as to their ability to write non-specialised task types such as letters, articles, reports and
reviews for a given purpose and target reader, covering a range of topics.
Candidates are required to carry out two tasks; a compulsory one in Part 1, and one from a choice of four in Part 2. The
length of each answer is 300/350 words. One of the tasks in Part 2 is based on an optional reading of one of three set books.
|Use of English
Candidates are expected to demonstrate their knowledge and control of the language system by completing various
tasks at text and sentence level. They are also required to read two texts, answer comprehension questions and to summarise
specified information from the texts.
The paper contains five parts and 44 questions, which take the form of an open cloze, a word formation task, gapped sentences,
key word transformations and summary writing task with comprehension questions.
Candidates are assessed as to their ability to listen to and understand texts taken from a variety of sources
including interviews, discussions, lectures and conversations. They are tested on their ability to understand the meaning
of spoken English, to extract information from a spoken text and to understand speakers attitudes and opinions.
The paper contains four parts and 28 questions, which take the form of two multiple-choice tasks, a sentence-completion
task and a three-way matching task.
Candidates are assessed as to their ability to interact in conversational English in a range of contexts. The standard
test format is two candidates and two examiners. Prompt materials are used by the examiner to stimulate and guide the interaction.
The paper contains three parts, which take the form of an interview section, a collaborative task and individual long turns
with follow-up discussion.
